Update form school in light of recent government announcements

14 May 2020 (by admin)

Dear Parents / Carers & Children,

First of all, we hope you and your families are safe and well. You are at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers.

Following the announcements from the government earlier this week, I wanted to update you about the current, and upcoming, position here at school.

As it stands, those children whose parents/carers who are critical workers, or who come under other identified criteria, the school remains open to provide childcare. From June 1st schools are being asked to open to children in Nursery, Reception, Y1 and Y6.

However, it is clear that the Prime Minister’s words were heavily conditional: “If we as a nation begin to fulfil the conditions I have set out, then in the next few weeks and months, we may be able to go further. In step two at the earliest by June 1st after half term, we believe we may be in a position to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beginning with reception, year 1 and year 6. Our ambition is that secondary pupils facing exams next year will get at least some time with their teachers before the holidays.”

Therefore, there is clearly much to think about and plan. We are continuing to look at, and discuss, all the latest guidance and advice form the DfE (Department for Education), the LA (Local Authority), the Archdiocese, our partner schools locally and other agencies.

We are considering very carefully what is best for the children, families and staff of St Cuthbert’s. Obviously, when answering these questions, safety is our upmost priority. At the moment the guidance we have received is limited in detail. We expect more guidance to follow later this week to support detailed planning. We are not taking any specific steps until then.

We also very much understand the worries and anxieties you will have at the moment, and those around the potential proposals for June. We want to make sure we make the right decisions for our all our school community. Further communication will follow as soon as we have more specific information, and certainly with plenty of notice before June.

Please stay safe, look after yourselves, your families and each other.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Rushton, all the staff and the governors
